Garfield Fish Farm

Brian Fox had never even owned an aquarium when he decided to become a fish farmer. That has proved to be no drawback to a business that now produces thousands of barramundi.A specialist in the sales and service of commercial refrigeration, several years ago Brian decided he wanted to work from home and Aquaculture seemed a good idea. So he bought five acres at Garfield in West Gippsland. Garfield Fish Farm now has a regular routine of buying up to 4000 fingerlings every three or four months from a South Australian hatchery. The fish are harvested when they are about 800 grams to one kilogram in weight, and about 35 centimetres in length. They take up to 12 months to reach this size. Some of the barramundi are grown to three or four kilograms.Barramundi are voracious eaters with feed being the biggest cost.
